TORONTO, CANADA – Anyone who has endured the pain of a tough breakup or difficult times will find Santyna’s music deeply relatable. While working to overcome major depression, generalized anxiety, PTSD and agoraphobia, Santyna wrote her new EP during the hardest time of her life. “When things got really bad for me emotionally,” she said, “it was my working on this EP that made everything feel better and made me feel like I could find happiness in this world.” Working on the EP facilitated her mental and spiritual growth and she wants to pass on that healing. During hard times, Santyna always found comfort listening to music by other artists, and she hopes that her music will do the same for her listeners.
Recorded in New York City and Toronto, her new EP, “VENIN” is slated to drop on November 27th. The 4-track collection has an R&B/Soul vibe with a little added Hip Hop flavor. Following on the successful release of her single, “FREE style,” the project shows the progression in the artist’s journey from bitter to better.
The new EP leads off with a track titled “hi.” The song was written while she was in a toxic relationship and it talks about the battle of staying in a relationship that doesn’t work for either person. To portray the conflict of being in love but arguing constantly, Santyna rewrote the song nearly twenty times to perfect her message.
Although she has spent much of her adult life in Toronto, Santyna was born and raised outside the city in Mississauga. With artists such as PARTYNEXTDOOR and Roy Woods hailing from the West Side, Mississauga is starting to receive more recognition. Santyna’s song, “Massasauga” is a clever play on words. As the Massasauga rattlesnake is found in the area where she was born, it extends the snake symbolism seen in the EP’s cover artwork where Santyna is depicted as the Mother of Snakes. Written after the break up, “Massasauga” shows the emotional shift to feeling better off without a toxic partner as illustrated in these lyrics:
“Of course, you can’t love a woman who don’t need a man.
Shoulda known it.
Hope you understand I showed you the mirror
to make you a better man.”
A transparent and honest individual who has been through mental health and emotional struggles, Santyna has unconditional love for all and is using her music to touch the lives of others who need to hear her message: “You know what? You’re not alone and I see you. I’ll always be there for you, and you are loved.”
She fell in love with being able to express herself through the arts at a young age. Writing poetry in grade school was a great outlet for expressing her thoughts and feelings. Singing since she was 4 years old led Santyna to vocal lessons and eventually to writing her own melodies. Growing up, she was seriously into R&B, grooving to artists such as Rihanna, Beyoncé, Destiny’s Child and TLC.
She is already working on a project to follow “VENIN” which will focus less on relationships and share more about herself. She plans to tackle the normative ideas surrounding mental health, with cheerfulness in some tracks since this is a big part of her personality. Santyna said “I’m lighthearted. I love to have fun but at the same time, I need to talk about the serious stuff.” Not afraid to use her art to bring attention to important issues, Santyna is speaking her truth even when it may not follow popular opinion, and she has a message for those struggling with mental illness: “I hear you, I see you, and you’re gonna get through this.”
